What to Watch this weekend: R. Kelly’s CBS interview, Ricky Gervais in After Life, Aretha Franklin tribute

We know TV has a lot to offer, be it network, cable, premium channels, or streaming platforms including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple, Facebook Watch, and elsewhere. So EW is here to help, guiding you every single day to the things that should be on your radar. Check out our recommendations below.

FRIDAY

After Life

HOW/WHEN & WHERE TO WATCH: Streaming on Netflix

On his new series, Ricky Gervais plays Tony, who decides to say and do exactly what he wants (like Gervais on Twitter?!) after his wife suddenly dies. Before diving into the After Life, binge a couple of the British actor’s other series this weekend, both available on Netflix. The Office: Before Steve Carell’s Michael Scott, there was David Brent, the narcissistic manager of a Slough, England, paper company who tells unfunny jokes and bumbles in front of documentary crew cameras. Extras: In a meta mockery of the TV industry jam-packed with celeb cameos, Gervais (who won an Emmy for his laugh-out-loud performance) plays a film extra who goes on to achieve middling sitcom success. —Dana Schwartz

EW critic Kristen Baldwin gave the new series an A- in her review.

“No one does withering disdain quite like Ricky Gervais. Surveying his targets through narrowed eyes, the comedian unleashes eloquent abuse in a soft-spoken rush, like one long sigh of exasperation. Though this style of brilliant brutality is the centerpiece of After Life, the six-episode Netflix dramedy — created by and starring Gervais — is also unexpectedly moving, and a welcome throwback to the oddball sweetness of his most famous work, The Office.”

Tin Star

HOW/WHEN & WHERE TO WATCH: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video

Season 2 is all about forgiveness, as Jim (Tim Roth) attempts to win back his family following some dirty deeds last season. And Elizabeth (Christina Hendricks) tries to cover up a killer secret. Turns out the Good Girls actress is also, well, not a good girl on this series.

Drag Me Down the Aisle

HOW/WHEN & WHERE TO WATCH: 9 p.m. on TLC

“This is weird…but so great at the same time.” Ditto what bride-to-be Emily, 24, says when four drag queens made famous on RuPaul’s Drag Race — Thorgy Thor, Alexis Michelle, Jujubee, and BeBe Zahara Benet — show up to help the microbiologist prepare for her wedding. Tackling everything from dance moves and lackluster centerpieces to musical selections, they work their real magic while instilling self-confidence in Emily, whose body-image issues caused by the dress her mom bought for her are only getting worse. With some laughs, tears, makeup, and lots of flair, these “fairy godmothers” help transform Emily’s big day — and maybe even the tiring bridal TV genre. B —Gerrad Hall

Buddy vs. Duff

HOW/WHEN & WHERE TO WATCH: 9 p.m. on Food Network

One is a Boss. The other is an Ace. But only of them will be named king of cake. Celebrity bakers/artists Buddy Valastro and Duff Goldman face off in this six-episode competition of technique, skills, and flavors; in the premiere they have to make their most beloved family recipe and then a car-inspired cake. “The amount of work we did in the amount of time we were given was really grueling,” Valastro says of the first challenge, where, he adds, he and sculptor Ralph Attanasia III did the work of 10 people. “We were really exhausted and overextended. That messes with you for sure. But it also made it that much more rewarding to present the final product.” —Gerrad Hall

Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul

HOW/WHEN & WHERE TO WATCH: 9 p.m. on CBS

The legacy of Aretha Franklin, who died last August at the age of 76, and her booming, mezzo-soprano loom large over popular music, having inspired multiple generations of artists. That influence is fully reflected in the tribute’s powerhouse slate: Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, SZA, Janelle Monáe, H.E.R., Brandi Carlile, Alessia Cara, Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, and more, all set to perform some of the Queen’s biggest hits, including “Respect,” “Think,” and “Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel).” Also making appearances are Franklin’s close collaborators and friends, Smokey Robinson and Clive Davis. (“I know how important this [show] was to [Clive],” says producer Ken Ehrlich. “And it gave us a little more incentive to do something special because of [his] relationship with Aretha.”) —Alex Suskind
