Oscar Isaac says Star Wars: Episode IX explores Poe and Leia’s bond

Oscar Isaac says Star Wars: Episode IX will continue to explore pilot Poe Dameron’s bond with General Leia Organa through the unused footage he shot with the late Carrie Fisher.

We’ve known for months that director J.J. Abrams planned to use cutting-room scenes to conclude Leia’s story after the actress died unexpectedly in December 2016.

But we haven’t had any hints of what those scenes contain.

Isaac, in a new interview with Sirius XM Insight’s John Fugelsang, revealed that the link between the characters — the rock-steady veteran trying to stabilize the younger hotshot — is a part of the new story.

Isaac said he understood why Abrams wanted to find a new home for that unused arc.
“I wasn’t surprised because I remember we were doing that, we worked a lot,” Isaac said. “[Fisher] and I worked together so much. We would talk about the scenes, and we got very tight during the shooting of that. So it was a beautiful thing to see, and it gets carried over into the new film as well.”

Seeing years-old footage resurrected for a new film is rare, but Isaac said he hopes it will give fans closure — not just as a farewell to Fisher, but also to do justice to her iconic character.

“It was definitely an unusual thing, but I also think it was right to engage with her character, and not just let it be something that fades away,” he said.

He added that Episode IX, which opens in December, will give Fisher and Leia “a proper place of honor.”
