Thor, Black Panther, more Marvel characters to get new stories through Serial Box

The world of Marvel continues to expand on the big screen, in the comics, and with new shows coming to the Disney+ streaming platform. Now, there are even more stories coming down the pipeline in audiobook and digital book forms.

Thor, Black Panther, Jessica Jones, and Black Widow, based on the Marvel Comics, will be the stars of four new original stories, per a partnership between Marvel and Serial Box.

Kicking off this summer with new Thor prose edited and showrun by Eisner nominee Alex de Campi (Bad Girls), these works will offer weekly episodes as both audio and digital books that run approximately the length of an average commute.

“Rolling out from summer will be four books,” de Campi wrote on social media, though a rep for Serial Box clarified the other titles beyond Thor don’t yet have an announced release date.

According to de Campi, the Thor book will feature Loki and the Black Widow book will feature the Winter Soldier. “The books are intended to be an easy and exciting first step for movie fans into the Marvel comics universe,” she wrote in a post on Instagram.

Aaron Stewart-Ahn, the co-screenwriter of Nicolas Cage’s amazingly bonkers Mandy film, serves as lead writer on the Thor title with a writers room that includes Brian Keene, Yoon Ha Lee, and Jay Edidin.

“I can’t say much but if you look at this writing team and their body of work you’ll see how totally cosmic this Thor story and the characters are going to be,” Stewart-Ahn tweeted. “And we had a writer’s room with so much varied life experience and points of view so it was like freaking Nidavellir.”

If this is the first time you’re seeing the name Serial Box, the publisher specializes in — as the name suggests — “serials,” long-form stories that play out in 10-16 week installments, like television. These stories can be read on the Serial Box app and website, and with a click, users can alternate back and forth between the digital book and the audio. The experience is designed to fill the average American’s daily commute time.

“Over the last 80 years, Marvel has grown to become a lifestyle for every kind of fan around the world – but it all started from serialized storytelling,” John Nee, Publisher of Marvel, said in a statement. “We were impressed by the quality and creativity of Serial Box’s content, and we are excited for both Marvel and Serial Box fans to experience these new stories together each week.”

Molly Barton, CEO and co-founder of Serial Box, added, “We are thrilled that Marvel is entrusting us to extend and expand the story worlds for these beloved characters. Our writer teams could not be more excited to share the new stories with listeners and readers everywhere.”

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated all four books come out this summer, though only the Thor book will be released in that window. The other titles don’t yet have announced release dates.
