The relationship between Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant and Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving during the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina, was comparable to a “middle school couple,” according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.
Windhorst recently discussed the relationship on ESPN Radio (around the 28-minute mark):
“I was talking to some people who were with ‘Team Free Agent’, I mean ‘Team LeBron’ at All-Star, and they said that Kyrie and KD were like a middle school couple that weekend. Eating together. … Doing drills together at practice. ‘I’ll rebound for you. You rebound for me. I’ll post you up. You post me up.’ They were eating together. They went to Miami together after the weekend.”
Durant and Irving, both members of Team LeBron, were spotted hanging out together throughout the weekend:

Meanwhile, a video of the two chatting in a hallway went viral, as some speculated that the pair were talking about teaming up in free agency this summer:

Both Irving (who grew up in New Jersey) and Durant have been commonly linked to the New York Knicks.
When asked about the hallway conversation with Durant after the break, Irving vented his frustration about the “bulls–t” while saying that type of drama takes away from the joy of playing in the NBA:

“It’s a video of me and one of my best friends talking,” Irving told reporters last month. “And then it turns out to be a dissection of a free-agency meeting? Do you get that? Like, do you get that? And then I’m asked questions about that? That’s what disconnects me from all that s–t.”
Durant also called Irving his “best friend” in an interview with Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium in December.
Neither Irving nor Durant has revealed what will happen in free agency this summer. For now, the basketball world will continue to dissect their relationship to try to discover clues as the wait for July 1 continues.
