The Highwaymen star Kevin Costner says Bonnie and Clyde were ‘animals’

In the new Netflix film The Highwaymen (debuts March 29), Kevin Costner plays real-life Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, who tracked, and ultimately killed, bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Like his character, the Waterworld star has an extremely dim view of the lovers, who were played by Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty in the famous 1967 film, Bonnie and Clyde.

“Bonnie and Clyde confronted innocent people, and if it was just five dollars out of a register, they killed for it,” says Costner. “You know, they were psychopaths. They didn’t see themselves that way, obviously. But, yeah, they were animals.”

“People were so obsessed with them and then that Bonnie and Clyde movie continued to set this idea of them as Robin Hoods,” says Woody Harrelson, who plays Hamer’s partner, Maney Gault. “This is a whole different version of the story, from the lawmen’s perspective.”

The Highwaymen is directed by John Lee Hancock and costars Kathy Bates, John Carroll Lynch, and Kim Dickens. Watch the film’s trailer, above.
