As Mindy Lahiri on The Mindy Project once quipped, “It’s so weird being my own role model.”
Now her creator Mindy Kaling is taking that statement semi-literally and creating a series inspired by her own adolescence. On Wednesday, Netflix announced they have inked a deal with Kaling for a ten-episode comedy series loosely based on her childhood.
The untitled series is described as a coming-of-age comedy that will follow the complicated life of a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl. Kaling created the series and will write, executive produce and serve as showrunner alongside Lang Fisher, who has previously written on The Mindy Project, Brooklyn Nine Nine, and 30 Rock. Netflix has ordered the show straight to series with an order of ten episodes.
It’s unclear whether Kaling will play any kind of onscreen role in the series. The deal is part of her previous Universal Television overall agreement, and it was already in development before she signed a new six-year deal with Warner Bros. TV.
2019 is shaping up to be a huge year for Kaling. After her breakout role on The Office, she went on to carve a path in television comedy with the success of The Mindy Project, which ran for six seasons across Fox and Hulu. Her most recent project Champions, which aired on NBC, only lasted for one season last spring.
She’s poised to breakout on the big screen with Late Night, which hits theaters in June 7. Kaling penned the comedy about a late night show and co-stars opposite Emma Thompson. Amazon picked it up for $13 million at Sundance in January. On the TV front, Kaling’s new anthology adaptation of beloved romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral is set to hit Hulu later this year.
