Mark Hamill was ‘first choice’ to voice Chucky in Child’s Play remake

Child’s Play remake producer Seth Grahame-Smith has said that Mark Hamill was the first to choice to voice Chucky in the film. It was revealed on Saturday evening at the movie’s WonderCon panel that the Star Wars actor had been cast as the killer doll in the movie, which is released June 21.

“We asked, thinking there was no way it would ever happen,” said Grahame-Smith, “and he said, ‘Yes.’ He was the first choice, a big swing, and it just happened.”

The producer also talked about working with Hamill on the project and watching him voice Chucky.

“I mean, first of all, to have an icon reimagining an iconic character is an incredible gift,” said Grahame-Smith, “and to have an actor and a voice performer who is a celebrated as mark Hamill, and as gifted as he is, I mean it’s incredible. He’s taking on this challenge with a huge amount of energy and really come at it in a very serious way. And it’s really something to watch him create a character, and sort of embody it, and I get to sit there and watch Mark Hamill record. It’s just incredible.”

At the panel, the film’s screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith admitted he had no idea who would play the role of Chucky when he wrote the script.

“I never obviously thought Mark Hamill would ever be in this movie when writing it,” said Smith. “Not because it’s a [bad] movie, it’s amazing, but it’s just like, It’s Mark Hamill! When I was writing it, I hadn’t thought who the voice would be. As soon as they told me, it was perfect. It fits this version of Chucky perfectly. It has a distinct feel that’s different from the original but still feels very much Chucky. It’s really exciting.”

While Hamill is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies, he is also an experienced voice artist whose portrayal of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and subsequent projects is widely regarded as among the best iterations of the character.

Brad Dourif voiced Chucky in the original 1988 film and its six sequels. This new version stars Aubrey Plaza as a mother who gives her son (Gabriel Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. The film costars Atlanta actor Brian Tyree Henry.
