Kelly Clarkson had a fresh take on two of Cardi B and Post Malone‘s biggest hits.
The singer and Voice coach, 36, surprised concertgoers at her Meaning of Life Tour stop in Long Island, New York on Thursday night with an epic mashup cover of Cardi’s “Be Careful” and Post Malone‘s “Better Now” — one that she only prepped hours earlier.
“We literally just put that together this afternoon,” Clarkson told concertgoers at the packed NYCB Live’s Nassau Coliseum, thanking her musical director Jason Halbert.
Her cover was streamed on Facebook Live, as park of Clarkson’s Minute and a Glass of Wine web series. It also included a portion of Lauryn Hill 1998 track “Ex Factor,” which Cardi sampled in “Be Careful” herself.

So how did the idea for the cover come up? “This idea came to me the other night because I’m a big fan of all three artists,” Clarkson explained. “And I did this mashup because I always find myself singing along to their songs.”
“I just love all those artists, I’m such a fan,’ she continued. “I probably should have broke it up and covered each individually, but I love when something is so good it reminds you of something else that’s so good, and then you just marry them.”

Clarkson also praised each artist individually, including Lauryn Hill — whom she called “my childhood.”
“I love that Miseducation of Lauryn Hill record,” she said, of Hill’s Grammy-winning album. “It changed all of us in every way.”
Malone’s album, beerbongs & bentleys, is a favorite of Clarkson’s too. “I love Post Malone,” she said. “I could put his stuff on and just go. There’s few people that I can just put an album on and I’m cool with every song. But I really like him.”
As for Cardi, Clarkson confessed that she was a fan of the singer’s “Money” video — especially “those incredibly hot women” working the stripper poles.
It inspired Clarkson, so much show that she said she could “totally imagine” herself dancing on a pole.
“I know they have those classes you can take, especially girls, there’s classes you can take, like, stripper classes? I just want to do it on my TV show as a joke,” she said, of her upcoming daytime talk show. “I just want to try!”
Actually, Clarkson has tried pole dancing before. “We’ve been in a hotel room before and randomly there was this pole. I was like, ‘What has happened in this hotel room? I don’t want to sleep on the beds,’ ” she recalled. “But there was this [pole] and I tried to hold myself up. And I’ll just say: props to women who can, because my big behind was heavy for that.”
“I should stop talking, my husband back there is freaking out,’ she teased.
Clarkson’s Meaning of Life Tour, which kicked off in January, is her first in three years.
Thursday’s show began with the American Idol season 1 champ singing an acoustic version of her first hit, “A Moment Like This.”
From there, Clarkson sang 25 tunes from Clarkson’s career — including “Love So Soft,” “Heat,” and “Whole Lotta Woman,” all off her eighth studio album, Meaning of Life.
Other tunes from her canon of hits (like “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” “Heartbeat Song,” “Because of You,” “Walkaway,” and “My Life Would Suck Without You”) also made the cut. There were unexpected entries, like “Just Missed the Train” (off her first album, Thankful) and “Sober” (off her third album, 2007’s My December).
“It’s Quiet Uptown,” the Hamilton tune Clarkson recorded for The Hamilton Mixtape, and “Never Enough,” the Greatest Showman tune Clarkson recorded for The Greatest Showman Reimagined got their own spots.
Opening artists Brynn Cartelli and Kelsea Ballerini joined Clarkson and her 12-piece band on stage for one song: Clarkson’s second-ever single, “Miss Independent.”
The night ended with a one-two punch of two of her happiest hits: “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and “Since U Been Gone.”
Tickets for Clarkson’s Meaning of Life Tour are now on sale. The tour continues through the end of the month, with stops in Boston, Baltimore, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, and Allentown, Pennsylvania.
