Will Smith won’t be back as Deadshot in Suicide Squad sequel

Will Smith’s sharpshooting antihero won’t be putting his life on the line in Warner Bros’. sequel to Suicide Squad.

EW has confirmed that the actor is not expected to reprise his role as Deadshot in The Suicide Squad, the similarly titled follow-up to the 2016 film. Set for release in August 2021, the new film is being written and directed by James Gunn (formerly of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies), with production eyeing a September start in Atlanta.

According to Variety, which first reported the news, scheduling issues were the deciding factor in Smith’s decision not to return. (Warner Bros. declined to comment, and representatives for Smith did not immediately respond to request for comment.)

Although Smith was never officially announced to appear in The Suicide Squad, he was one of the headlining stars of the first movie, which centered on a motley crew of supervillains dragooned into executing a hazardous black-ops mission for the government in exchange for reduced sentences. His castmates included Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, and Jared Leto.

Casting information for The Suicide Squad has yet to be revealed.

Smith’s upcoming films include Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake and Sony’s threequel Bad Boys for Life.
